Wooden coins were first introduced in 1933 as an alternative currency when the bank in Blaine, Washington failed. What was born out of necessity later turned into novelty further into the 1930s as civic celebrations started handing out wooden coins as souvenirs for their community events. The idea continued into the advertising world as wooden nickels would be used as tokens to be redeemed at restaurants or bars for free items.
